Hermod — Field Unit for the Heimdal System

In a Heimdal system, one Hermod unit is mounted at each elevator. Hermod ensures that all data from the elevator reaches the Heimdal server in the plant room securely — and that an on-site technician can always connect locally, without going through the server.

Hermod is built for environments where reliability and robustness are non-negotiable. All external interfaces — to the elevator’s RS-485 bus, the NewLift FST controller, and the Huginn sensors — are galvanically isolated. This protects the system against voltage spikes, ground loops, and electrical noise that are common in elevator installations.

For the technician who needs to troubleshoot on-site, a USB-C port on the unit provides full access to diagnostic logs and configuration — without logging into the Heimdal server or needing a network connection.

Features

  • Ethernet to the hospital’s internal network — connects Hermod to the Heimdal server
  • Isolated RS-485 — communication with Huginn sensor modules
  • Isolated RS-232 — communication with NewLift FST elevators
  • CAN bus — prepared for future expansion and additional nodes
  • Galvanic isolation on all external interfaces — protects against interference and voltage spikes
  • Industrial 24 V supply — connects directly to the elevator’s existing 24 V power
  • Watchdog timer — automatically restarts on software fault, no manual intervention needed
  • USB-C for local diagnostics — troubleshoot and configure on-site without a network connection
  • Based on Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 — proven platform, readily available spare parts

Part of the Heimdal system

Hermod is part of the Heimdal system and is delivered as an integrated component in the system installation. Hermod communicates upward to the Heimdal server and downward to the Huginn sensor module on the car roof.

Who it’s for

Hermod is included in all Heimdal installations. It is the component the technician encounters at each elevator — straightforward to mount, straightforward to troubleshoot, built to sit and work unsupervised for years on end.

Status

Hermod is under active hardware development as part of the Heimdal system.
